SCAM ALERT!
License Plate # Lookups

Over 90% of all License Plate Lookup sites are SCAMS!

The information presented on this web site is provided by Docusearch Investigations, a fully licensed and insured private investigation firm. It is intended to educate consumers on how to quickly identify scam web sites offering license plate lookups. Even if you choose another firm, please take 3 minutes to review this information. When searching for a firm to reverse a license plate, always follow these three common sense rules. Doing so may save you hundreds of dollars and hours of valuable time:

Common Sense Rule #1:

Stay clear from any website that doesn’t publish their contact telephone number.
Most of these scam sites appear overnight and aren’t even real businesses, rather affiliate fronts for subscription software. Look for their phone number. If you don’t have the ability to speak with a live person, it is most certainly a scam.

Common Sense Rule #2:

There is no such thing as an instant license plate # lookup.
You have probably already visited several websites promising unlimited license plate lookups delivered instantly, for a low access fee or database subscription fee. What these websites don’t tell you is that they are providing obsolete information collected from outdated databases. Despite what you may have been told, the DMV does not sell current registration records to the public OR to private databases. It is protected information available only to law enforcement and licensed private investigators who demonstrate a need for the information.

These websites offering “instant” License Plate Searches are the biggest scams out there. They lure you in by advertising that the search is free; simply enter the license plate number you’re searching. After some fancy computer animations, their software informs you that your desired information has been found–just pay a one-time, or worse, a continual subscription fee to access it. The problem is, even if they happen to have a record for the license plate number you searched, it won’t be for the current owner or current vehicle, since that information is protected.

Common Sense Rule #3:

Only buy from a reputable state licensed, insured investigative firm.
Just as you wouldn’t hire an unlicensed, uninsured contractor, providers of information are no different. State licensed investigators answer to governmental agencies and are bonded and/or insured. They are much less likely to perpetrate a scam. They also have access to information sources that others don’t. Sure, it will probably cost $35-$45 for a license plate lookup, but at least you’ll be assured that the information returned is guaranteed to be current and accurate. After all, what good is obsolete information?

Following these three simple rules should keep you safe. For further information about license plate lookups, including the types of people who claim to provide them, please see the Related Articles section on the right side of this page.
